Kurulu Kele

“Kurulu Kele”

The unique element of Sri Lanka is that there is always something awe-inspiring and exciting anywhere you choose to travel. Owing to its tropical richness and natural heritage, the country is blessed with a wide variety of flora and fauna, adorning every corner of the land. As the name itself suggests, “Kurulu Kele” is a birds’ sanctuary which is quite famous which attracts a significant amount of visitors on a daily basis.

Did you Know?

“Kurulu Kele” is located in the lowland wet zone and was declared as a sanctuary in 1941 due to its abundant bird and plant diversity. However, due to its location in the centre of a city, this sanctuary faces lot of human pressure.

Why “Kurulu Kele”?

There is no hesitation to visit this location if you are an ardent nature lover since this forest is filled with migrant as well as typical avifauna throughout the year. But what if you are otherwise? It still offers you outstanding views, breathtaking sights for photography and a soothing experience away from the bustle of city-life. If you plan a complete trip, you can head to Dedigama Kota Vehera, which is located not-so-far-away from “Kurulu Kele”

Location and Route

“Kurulu Kele” is situated in the Golahela Grama Seva Division of Kegalle District. The route to the venue is pretty straightforward for someone travelling from Colombo. Be it public transport or your own ride, firstly one has to arrive at Kegalle Town via the Colombo-Kandy Main Road and from there you have to take the Bandaranayake Mawatha.

Best times to travel

From March to July and again in October and November, the monsoonal rains are said to be active. If you choose to visit “Kurulu Kele” during these times, chances are that you may not be able to enjoy the scenic beauty of the birds completely. Therefore, for your optimum satisfaction a journey to “Kurulu Kele” should be ideally arranged in August, September, December, January or February.
