Breathtaking cascades – Uduwara Falls and Nagodawa Falls

Trek lovers – you better be ready! Would the thought of waterfalls between mountains entice you to hop on that next flight and make your way to Island –Sri Lanka? Well, if that’s doesn’t we don’t know what will!

Among the majestic mountains of Kalupahana, a quaint little city located just off the chilly central city of Bandarawela, Sri Lanka’s tallest– the Bambarakanda waterfall! But no! We aren’t going to take you through the famous landscapes of Bambarakanda – that would be too mainstream despite the fact that the waterfall is a spectacle of its own. Although this would have been the most unexpected climax to this blog – we are actually going to show you some of Sri Lanka’s lesser seen waterfalls which are within close proximity to Bambarakanda – they are by name; Uduwara and Nagodawa falls.

The Bambarakanda area hides deep within itself two beautiful waterfalls that makes a perfect trek tour for adventure seekers. The waterfalls are situated between two mountains and at the closest observation point you’ll be able to see both waterfalls clearly from the mountain in front of them.

Route

The route to the entry point is best travelled via private transport up until the closest rest-house to the trail. Kalupahana is located approximately 180 kms from Colombo. The route is as follows – Colombo-> Ratnapura -> Balangoda -> Kalupahana (left turn from Colombo– Badulla highway [A4] at Kalupahana.

First you will be walking along the Kalupahana – Ohiya jeep track and then through tea trails. The last stretch is an abandoned tea trail which now winds though a grass covered mountain slope. For the most part, a moderate ascend is experienced. There are several scenic outlooks in to the eastern plains and to the mountain ranges and waterfalls in the area.

Best Time

The best months to hike are April and September, when the season is a bit dry, and less on rain. The trek would take approximately 1.5 hours.

Trek stages and curiosities

0-1km – The first kilomtre is relatively easier to trek. You will walk up-hill along the Kalupahana-Ohiya road. When you trek about 500-600 metres onto your left is you come across the famous beauty – yes! You guessed right – the Bambarakanda falls. Spoiler alert – you might spend some time glancing at this beauty as she makes a fall from the highest point – but don’t forget to proceed to the goal of your trek – Uduwara Falls and Nagodawa Falls!

1 – 1.8km – After a brief ascend, the trail will transform into a paved tea trail with rocks and stones with moderate ascend. Continue to climb along this trail. On this trail you will come across the tea factory of the Udavariya Estate.

1.8 – 2.6 Km – This is the last section of the trail and is comparatively flatter than the others. About 300-400 metres down this trail you will come across the Eastern plains and some magnificent sights of smaller peaks around the corner.

As the trail makes the sharp left turn around the mountain as you reach the end point of the trail, you will be presented to the uninterrupted view in to the mountain slopes in front of you. You can see the two waterfalls cascading through these mountain slopes.

The waterfall to your right hand side is the Uduwara falls. The falls to the left of Uduwara falls and slightly above it is called Nagadowa falls. It’s very difficult to reach the base of these waterfalls as it requires walking through a deep rough valley with thick forest cover.

Tips and tricks

  • Make sure that you carry a water bottle. Most part of the trail is dry and water sources are limited.
  • Avoid drinking water from streams as they are flowing trough tea fields.
  • Leaches may occasionally bother you, especially in the upper sections of the trail.
  • The best time of the day to do this trail is a sunny after-noon. The view of the plains and mountains in warm evening light is an unbelievable sight.
