Just like any other country, Sri Lanka was also inhabited by its indigenous people, who today are very low in their numbers but stick to their true identity always. Their populations are dwindling mainly because due to gradual loss of their ancestral lands and also very low acceptance by the mainstream community.
They are known as the ‘Veddhas’ – they are the true inhabitants of the land, for thousands of years, before groups of immigrants made their way here into the country. The veddhas have their very own dialect of Sinhalese which is quite interesting to listen to!
In a world where absorbing anything and everything is everywhere, this group is known to have protected their authenticity regardless of time! Their dress, speech and tribal activities are a definite learning experience for anyone.
A short boat off the coast of the sun kissed shores of Nilaveli will bring you to Pigeon Island National Park that comprises two specks of land. The reserve is one of the two official marine parks in the country. Snorkelers can view an exotic array of fish, unbelievable corals and other sea animals just a few metres away.
